Isla
Canela
As its name
suggests, Isla Canela is a small island linked by a bridge across
the river Guadiana. Like all the resorts on the Costa de la Luz
it is purpose-built with the beach being the main attraction. Isla
Canela is a mere ten minutes drive from Costa Esuri and provides
a modern feel without being over developed. The fine white sands
stretch for over 7km and gently slope into the ocean ensuring safe
bathing. Isla Canela is built around a neat, modern marina which
offers a range of boating facilities as well as a number of shops,
restaurants and bars. The yacht club here offers sailing, jet-ski
and canoeing excursions and also boat sales and rentals. Radiating
out from the marina is a growing number of large hotel and apartment
complexes. There are some lovely inland villages to explore and
the authentic fishing village of Ayamonte is definitely worth exploring.
Isla Canela also offers an 18 hole, par 72 golf course which is
set in beautiful surroundings with scattered olive, eucalyptus and
orange trees.

expect plenty of local hospitality. It is totally purpose built
towards tourism and caters best for mature couples and undemanding
families. The town is dotted with luxury villas and some large hotel
complexes while a pretty promenade hugs the beach which is without
doubt the main attraction. It consists of 2km of fine sand backed
by glorious dunes in some places and a promenade around the centre.
A small commercial area has grown up in the centre which is now
the focal point of the resort. Restaurants tend to be fairly authentic
and cater for the many Spanish holidaymakers in addition to other
Europeans. There are also a few bars along the promenade offering

Ayamonte
Ayamonte is
a great place to discover typical Spanish life. The centre is a
hub of atmosphere which is captured in the main square and the narrow
cobbled streets are full of restaurants and cafes. With many bars,
shops and boutiques, the town is lively all year round. Ayamonte
benefits from a picturesque marina which is lined with palm trees,
and a port where you can catch the ferry to Villa Real, the Portuguese
town on the opposite shore. The popular beach resort of Isla Canela
is only a 5 minute drive and offers long stretches of fine golden
sand and excellent golfing facilities. Additionally, the motorway
is only a short drive away, linking all the other towns and amenities
in the region, and providing incredibly easy access to Portugal
via the motorway bridge. The infinite beaches of the Costa de la
Luz, lined by pine groves, form an arch from Ayamonte to Tarifa,
from the mouth of the Guadiana River to the Strait of Gibraltar.
This combination of scenery, history, traditional Spanish atmosphere
and nearby beach, make Ayamonte an idyllic destination.

El
Rompido
Situated behind
a sandy peninsular, El Rompido exemplifies what is so unique about
the Costa de la Luz. An idyllic fishing village it boasts a good
variety of seafood restaurants serving the freshest local catches
and is one of the most tranquil and uncrowded spots on Huelva's
Costa de la Luz. El Rompido sits on the Rio Piedras river estuary
at the start of a 10km stretch of sandy beach shielded by dunes
and pine trees and is the kind of village that used to abound in
Spain but can now only be found in certain fortunate areas. The
beach here is one of the best in Andalucia. The protected reserve
called the Paraje Natural Marismas del Rio Piedras y Flecha del
Rompido, with its wide variety of habitats, has a rich array of
plants and birds. From the village there are some marvellous views
across the 300m wide estuary over to the protected spit, which is
made up of sand dunes and lined with magnificent beaches on either
side. You can visit the spit by hiring a fishing boat for the short
